Teachers + Tech – In an interesting article from Katrina Schwartz, she explains how the combination of technology and teaching allows for more classroom freedom for students to be able to direct their learning. The article gives examples of how the traditional classroom has changed and how the ‘old school’ methods of a classroom with traditional lecture is becoming a thing of the past. It goes on to talk about how curiosity and questioning have been replaced by standardized questions and answers.  17 Ways – For an idea of how iPads are being successfully used in the classroom, check out http://edudemic.com/2013/02/ways-ipads-are-being-used-in-schools/  . The article does a decent job of giving ideas and solutions to using an iPad (or tablet) in the classroom in a way that best supports the students.  Number one is ‘Putting the Students in Charge of the Learning Experience’. Check it out if you’re interested in not only how the iPad may benefit Pine Creek in a 1:1 but think ‘device’ instead as the different devices each have pros and cons.

This American Life – Want an idea of how good we have it here at Pine Creek? Check out the episode of ‘This American Life’ from this week at: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/radio-archives/episode/487/harper-high-school-part-one  The second part of this story will air on the 22nd which reminds me that I can’t remember hearing any episodes which played in a 2-part back-to-back way before. (They have done separate stories on the housing market crash but they were spread out). The Harper High episode (shared above) is an interesting and heartbreaking story about education in an urban area and those it affects. (It becomes particularly apparent when you see the tags of ‘death’, ‘crime’, and ‘teenagers’ as the keywords for the podcast)
